What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

There is a system of healthcare which is referred to as, Traditional Chinese Medicine, which originates from China. In Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners work with 2,000 acupuncture points which are interconnected meridians, or pathways.  These pathways conduct crucial energy referred to as “qi”. Each person has four areas which need to stay in balance; emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical.  These areas are acted upon by opposing energies, yin and yang, or negative and positive energy.  The yin and yang work together with the help of qi to achieve optimum health.  Disorders are due a disruption of balance between yin and yang.

What is Acupuncture?

Extremely fine needles are placed under the skin in order to stimulate points in one’s body, called acupoints. Suction, pressure, heat, frictions, or electromagnetic energy can also be used to work on acupoints.  When these acupoints are stimulated, energy is balanced and patients are able to maintain a healthy mind and body.

Is it Safe?

Yes, acupuncture is safe.  When administered by a qualified acupuncturist there are no side effects of acupuncture.  Also, for our patient’s safety, we only use sterilized, one-time use needles for our procedures.

What can Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture can be used for many medical purposes.  Diseases can be treated, or prevented and chronic pain can be alleviated.

Is it Painful?

Patients state that they feel a warm, tingly sensation when the needles are place into the skin.  They also say that the treatments are rather relaxing.

What should you expect?

Our office uses the Dr. Tan’s Balance Method of acupuncture. This method does not insert needles directly into the site of pain. Rather, the needles are placed along different meridians corresponding to the organ systems, typically somewhere between the elbows and fingers, as well as the knees and toes. The Balance Method is less
invasive and more effective than other styles of acupuncture. Patients are typically laying on a table, or sitting in a recliner for 30-45 minutes. The lights are turned down, quiet music plays and optional heat lamps can be used. Most patients find the treatments extremely relaxing and many fall asleep.

How many treatments will it take?

Every patient responds differently to acupuncture treatments. Some people notice a difference immediately, while deeper problems take a while to notice improvements. Every patient will go through a detailed examination with our medical staff before starting the acupuncture treatment. We do offer a short treatment trail, to see how your body responds to acupuncture treatments. After the initial evaluation, our team will meet to discuss the individual patients case and come up with an individualized treatment plan to address all the health concerns.
